Christmas Events Near Yorkshire’s Beaches

Christmas is one of the most, if not the most magical times of year. As children, we get most excited about seeing Father Christmas and opening presents, but the older we get we appreciate different things, from hugging a warm hot chocolate whilst we have a stroll around the Christmas markets to settling down in front of a roaring fire with a festive film.

During the festive season, there’s always plenty going on to get people into the spirit, and the Yorkshire Coast is no exception.

Rather than scrambling around searching for things to do on the day, we’ve compiled a list of all the Christmas events going on across the Yorkshire Coast, so you can arrange your diary well in advance.

1. NYMR – Santa Special

If you’ve ever seen the film The Polar Express, you’ll remember just how magical it seemed, whizzing through the snowy landscape on a locomotive.

Well now you can have your own festive train experience thanks to NYRM (North Yorkshire Moors Railway) which will run on weekends in December as well as the first week of the school Christmas holidays.

The trains depart at various times during the day from either Pickering or Grosmont. As you navigate the Yorkshire countryside, Santa and his jolly helpers will pass through the carriage where children will be presented with a soft toy and a NYRM backpack.

The NYRM Santa Special experience costs £30 for both children (1-15) and adults and the journey will last 1 hour. Children under 1 year can travel free on the lap of a parent or carer. There will also be fun and games throughout the journey.

2. Scarborough Ice Rink

Ice skating is one of those things you often see in a Hallmark film, where everyone’s hair is perfectly in place and no-one is dressed for the weather!

Although we think it gets cold here in the UK, it’s never cold enough for a natural ice skating rink, so you have to rely on pop-up ice rinks if you want to skate outside during the festive season.

Scarborough’s very own pop-up ice rink will open on 9th December 2022 and close on 3rd January 2023, giving you plenty of time over the festive season to get your skates on!

The rink is open between 11am and 8pm, so the younger ones can come at a quieter time during the day.

3. Irton Garden Centre – Santa Grotto

Visiting Santa’s grotto is one of the first festive things we experience as a child – sitting on Santa’s lap (or on his bench as it is likely to be in this day and age) and handing over your wish list.

Upon arrival, you will make your way through the Winter Wonderland where you will be greeted by Santa’s elves ready to meet the big man himself. Santa will then sit with your child for a photo (which you can take yourselves) and hand over a gift for your little one to take home.

The grotto experience costs £14.95 per child, which also includes up to 2 adults free of charge.

Irton Garden Centre’s grotto will arrive on Saturday 23rd November and stay right up until Christmas Eve.

4. Afternoon Tea at Gisborough Hall

Afternoon Tea is a great way to treat your loved one to a couple of hours of rest and relaxation in a stunning setting, whilst sampling some tasty treats.

During your afternoon tea experience at Gisborough Hall, you will be served by the log fire in the Drawing Room and Inner Hall and enjoy some of the following sweet treats:

  • Homemade cranberry and nutmeg scones, jam, brandy cream
  • Chocolate brownie and pistachio cream
  • Before 8 macaroon
  • Nutmeg custard and orange cream tart
  • Amaretto and gingerbread mousse

As well as the sweet treats, you can also enjoy some of the following sandwich fillings; roast turkey, sage and onion stuffing with cranberry, poached salmon, chive, cream cheese and watercress, mature cheddar and chutney, roast beef and English mustard mayonnaise.

If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth (what are we saying?!), you can opt for a savoury afternoon tea instead, which has the following in place of the sweet treats:

  • Homemade local cheese scone with butter
  • Turkey and cranberry scotch egg
  • Fruit cake
  • Wensleydale cheese
  • Homemade pork, apricot and sage sausage roll
  • Fruit chutney

The festive afternoon tea will be served between Sunday 27th November – Friday 23rd December.

Sewerby Hall’s Winter Woodland is a more relaxed experience where you can wander round the grounds and enjoy the illuminations and special effects.

As you make your way through the woodland, you’ll be immersed in bright lights and sounds around you as the night draws in.

There’s several performances each night, starting at 4.30pm with the last one being at 7pm, so the younger ones can visit straight from school. The event starts on Friday 9th December and finishes on Friday 23rd December.

At the end of the trail, there will be plenty of festive food from local businesses to sample, including stone baked pizzas.
